The Wausau West hockey team made it three wins in a row to start the season and opened Wisconsin Valley Conference play with an 8-1 win over Marshfield at Marathon Park Tuesday in a game heard on 98.9 WXCO. Owen Pergolski recorded a hat trick and already has six goals on the season for the Warriors. Cooper DePuydt and Hendrix Damrow each had two goals and Julian Scalcucci recorded 19 saves in net for West, who will travel to southeast Wisconsin Friday and Saturday for games at Waukesha and University School of Milwaukee. Both of those games will be broadcast live on 98.9 WXCO.

Also in a WVC hockey opener, Stevens Point beat East-Merrill United 14-0. Grant Molski had a hat trick for the Panthers while Jace Dedie added a pair of goals.

In the Great Northern Conference the Mosinee hockey team peppered Antigo goalie Austin Martinson over and over again but the Red Robins’ shot stopper stood tall for more than three periods. However, Tyler Baars overtime goal gave Mosinee a 2-1 win. Martinson made an amazing 60 saves on 62 shots faced. Evan Gwidt also scored for Mosinee.

Other boys’ hockey scores:

Tomahawk 8 Lakeland 1: Jonah Dickens a first period hat trick, Jett Reilly 2 goals, for Tomahawk.

Northland Pines 14 Rhinelander 1

Waupaca 5 Medford 0.

In girls’ hockey, Emma Brandt and Ava Whitmore scored goals and Taylor Simonson had 25 saves as the Central Wisconsin Storm started Wisconsin Valley Conference play with a 2-0 win over the Wisconsin Valley Union. The Storm improves to 3-1 overall with their third straight win.

In boys’ basketball, Wausau West and D.C. Everest went on the road and earned non-conference wins. The Warriors improved to 3-0 with a 56-47 win at Prentice. West trailed 21-19 at halftime but outscored the Buccaneers 37-26 in the second half. D.C. Everest wins for the second time in three games with a 76-57 victory at Ashwaubenon. Other WVC teams in action Tuesday saw SPASH fall 62-59 at Bay Port, Marshfield got 31 points from Chris Pohl and beat Appleton East 81-59 and Wisconsin Rapids fell at Onalaska 83-35.

Traditionally the Marathon boys’ basketball team opens their season after the Thanksgiving weekend to allow coach Adam Jacobson as much practice time with his team before tipping off the regular season. That was the case again this season and the Red Raiders used their preseason to good use with an impressive 72-47 win at Regis in Eau Claire on Tuesday. Auburndale also earned a non-conference win, 66-52 over Colby. Stratford fell at home to Iola-Scandinavia 60-39.

In the Great Northern Conference, Mosinee got 16 points from Treve Stoffel and 12 from Brayden Reinke but it wasn’t enough as Xavier rallied from a five point halftime deficit to beat Mosinee 59-56. Other GNC non-conference action had Tomahawk win a Faith Christian 81-49, Antigo top Clintonville 76-61 and Medford fall at Chippewa Falls 65-58.

In girls’ basketball, Stevens Point won a battle of highly ranked teams 74-61 over Rice Lake in a game played at UW-Eau Claire. Jada Seubert scored 28 points to lead SPASH while Leah Awe added 21. Another WVC team in action on Tuesday was Marshfield but the Tigers trip to western Wisconsin was less successful in a 65-38 loss at La Crosse Central.

It was conference action in the Marawood-South in girls’ hoops. Newman Catholic fell at home to Auburndale 52-32. Mallory Rozwadowski and Alexis Gliniecki each had 6 points for the Cardinals. Marathon lost at Assumption 59-49 to fall to 2-1 overall. Stratford rolls past Edgar 55-34 with Carly Pankratz scoring 16 points for the Tigers.

The Great Northern Conference also started their league schedule on Tuesday with Merrill playing their first ever conference game and winning 50-46 at Lakeland. Mosinee earned a significant early season win by beating Rhinelander 43-32 on the Hodags home court. Antigo edged Northland Pines 51-49 and Medford beat Tomahawk 60-31.
