After a senior season helping his team to a Division 1 state semifinal appearance, D.C. Everest football standout Blake Bangtson was named the 2024 recipient of the Win Brockmeyer Award. The Brockmeyer is awarded to the most outstanding high school football player of the greater Wausau area. Each player is nominated by their coach and must be a graduating senior who is outstanding on the football field, but also recognized for their leadership, courage and sportsmanship. For winning the award, Bangtson receives a $1500 scholarship.

The other nominees were Will McCorison of Wausau West, Evan Groene of Newman Catholic and Jesse Napgezek of Wausau East. Each of them will receive a $500 scholarship for being nominated by their coach and school for the award.

Coming off a junior season that was cut short due to injury, Bangtson put up some amazing numbers in 2024. He ran the football 305 times for 2,136 yards and 30 touchdowns. Bangtson also caught 31 passes for 632 yards and 6 touchdowns.

The Win Brockmeyer Award, which was first awarded in 1996, is named for the legendary Wausau High School football coach. Brockmeyer coached at Wausau H.S. for 34 seasons from 1937 to 1970 and won an amazing 230 games against just 33 losses and 9 ties. In the 1940’s Brockmeyer’s teams won 46 games in a row, a streak that ended in 1946 and was a Wisconsin state record for 41 years. Brockmeyer coached future Pro Football Hall of Famers Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch and Jim Otto at Wausau High School.
